TV Sex in Overdrive

I can remember as a child being forbidden to watch Three's Company. Even when I would sneak to the spare bedroom to watch it without being noticed, I didn't understand much of what was happening. It's slapstick sexual overtones seem mild compared to the new teen dramas on TV. It used to be TV talked about sex or portrayed it in an adult world such as the megahit Friends. Not anymore. With new series like the hit OC and MTV produced Laguna Beach sex is brought to the teen world.
This proliferation of sex on TV has not gone unnoticed. According to a new study by the Kaiser Family Foundation, over 70% of TV shows now contain depictions or references to sex or sexual practices. That's up 6% from just three years ago. For every hour of TV watched, we are now exposed to FIVE scenes of sex. |

Among those shows that contain sex only 14% talk about consequences of unhealthy sexual activity. Of the shows marketed to a teen audience, the sex portrayed is largely absent of the emotional upheaval that takes place in their lives after having sex.
The 2005 surprise hit, Laguna Beach takes teen sexuality to a new heights. This reality show set in upscale California follows the spoiled lives of rich kids that have been largely forgotten by their parents. Their entire decadent lifestyle is portrayed as the norm of high schoolers. You can check out www.mtv.com to understand more of this show that your teen is probably watching.
